Four local Iowa school districts will receive grants to help them provide mental health support to students and families, including Dubuque Community Schools. The Dubuque school district will receive $650,000 to assist with “mental health support and other wraparound services,” according to the Iowa Department of Education. The department awarded more than $8.6 million in competitive grants to 64 school districts using federal COVID-19 relief funds. Dubuque Community Schools spokesman Mike Cyze says that the district’s grant will pay for social-emotional learning curriculum, mental health first aid training for employees and a “wrap-around center to support students and connect them to mental health resources.” Other districts receiving grants are Maquoketa Valley Community School District, which will receive $30,000; Monticello Community School District, which will receive $70,000; and West Delaware County Community School District, which will receive $74,000.
