Grover “Deacon” Jones , who played for the Dubuque Packers of the Midwest League and batted .409 in his lone season with the Dubuque Packers in 1956 died Sunday in Sugarland, Texas. He was 89 years old. He was the only man to hit .400 in Midwest League history. Jones played parts of the 1962, 1963, and 1966 seasons for the Chicago White Sox. Later he was the hitting coach for the Houston Astros from 1976 to 1982, and later was the hitting coach for the San Diego Padres from 1984 to 1987. In 100 games with the Dubuque Packers in 1956, Jones hit .409 with 26 home runs and 120 RBIs.
