On Wednesday, the Wisconsin Drug Recognition Expert Program held its annual awards banquet in Fond du Lac. A Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) is a law enforcement officer who has gone through extensive training on how to recognize what drugs a person may be under the influence of. Grant County Sheriffs announced on their Facebook page that Sgt. Mark Schwarz received the award for Drug Recognition Expert of the Year for 2023! Sgt. Schwarz was recognized for the work he did over the course of 2023. Still, more specifically, for an incident where he did an evaluation on a subject, and because of his training, he recognized that the person was having a severe medical incident. This resulted in the person getting appropriate medical care, and his life was saved due to the work of Sgt. Schwarz.
