Dubuque’s Parks and Recreation Commission voted 6-0 opposing plans for the redevelopment of Chaplain Schmitt Island, withholding an expected recommendation Tuesday until the plan’s promoters, the DRA, seek more public feedback. At issue is putting millions of dollars into the project at an area prone to flooding. DRA President and CEO Alex Dixon said he would heed the board’s advice and do more public forums to discuss potential developments on the island before going to the City Council for approval of the development plan.
