Iowa Rep. Shannon Lundgren, R-Peosta, defeated retired educator Carolyn Wiezorek, of Asbury, for the House District 65 seat in Tuesday’s election. Lundgren secured 11,934 votes, 64.24% of the ballots cast, compared to 6,622 ballots cast for Wiezorek.
Representation of the city of Dubuque and surrounding areas at the Iowa State Capitol will look much different next session, missing two longtime incumbents and gaining the first Republican representative in decades.
Incumbent Iowa Rep. Lindsay James, D-Dubuque, will return to the Statehouse for the 2025 session with Democrat Tom Townsend — winning outgoing Iowa Sen. Pam Jochum’s Senate District 36 seat — and Republican Jennifer Smith in House District 71. Smith beat out longtime Iowa Rep. Chuck Isenhart, D-Dubuque.
