The Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency (DMASWA) has been selected to receive up to $4 million in federal funds to construct a new battery recycling and collection hub within its future customer convenience center. After the award has been negotiated with The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency will use the funds to construct a new battery recycling and collection hub within its future customer convenience center at the Dubuque Metro Landfill. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2025. This facility will create a centralized drop-off location for the collection of spent batteries, which will then be shipped to specialized facilities for metal extraction and recycling into new batteries. The project will also maintain remote collection points to ensure accessibility for rural and underrepresented populations.
