Police said a Dubuque man displayed a knife and strangled a woman in a domestic assault Friday night. 27-year-old Stanislaus J. Charlery of Dubuque was arrested at 10:24 p.m. Friday on Caledonia Place on charges of domestic abuse assault, domestic abuse assault impeding air/blood flow causing bodily injury and domestic abuse assault — display or use of weapon. Court documents state that an officer arriving at the scene witnessed the victim walking out of the residence holding a knife, hyperventilating and “obviously upset,” being followed by Charlery. The victim told police that Charlery began to assault her after an argument ensued over Charlery being intoxicated. She said Charlery hit her multiple times, pulled a lock of hair out of her head, pushed her into another room and pinned her in a corner with a knife. The victim said Charlery then began to strangle her. Charlery initially denied an altercation, but told the responding officer that the victim used the knife to “basically defend herself” and later admitted to being the “primary aggressor.”
