State highway departments east of the Mississippi River are entering construction season with a series of projects to address road quality and safety in the tri-state area. Their summer agendas include extensive work along major highway corridors that could delay traffic out of Dubuque toward Madison. Wisconsin Department of Transportation will pick up where Iowa DOT ends at the Mississippi River with about $15 million in resurfacing and other minor improvements on Highway 61/151 for 7.5 miles north to where Highway 61 exits the expressway at Dickeyville. After the Iowa-to-Dickeyville section of Highway 61/151 is completed WisDOT has 2027 plans to continue to resurface Highway 151 northeast of Dickeyville. In addition to the work on the expressway, WisDOT also plans to mill and repave State Route 81 for 2.3 miles coming out of Cassville. This much smaller project is expected to cost between $500,000 and $1 million and will include new guardrails as well as pavement.
