Illinois transportation officials plan to launch a road construction project next week in Jo Daviess County. Weather permitting, construction is slated to begin Monday on the intersection of Highway 20 and Barge Terminal Road in East Dubuque. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the 1.5-mile work zone is from Frentress Lake Road to just east of Barge Terminal Road. The project aims to improve the safety of the intersection, which connects to a 100-acre logistics park, and includes adding acceleration and deceleration lanes in both directions of Highway 20. An island will be installed on westbound Highway 20 to allow traffic to focus on oncoming traffic in one direction — instead of all four lanes of traffic — when entering or exiting Barge Terminal Road. Also, the left turn lane for eastbound Highway 20 at Barge Terminal Road will be eliminated. One lane of traffic will be open in each direction during the $13.6 million project, which is expected to be completed in November.
