Federal officials to launch habitat restoration project on Mississippi River near Guttenberg

Federal officials will mark the launch of a local habitat rehabilitation project with an event later this month. The St. Paul District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for its Lower Pool 10 restoration project at 1 p.m. April 22 at Guttenberg’s North Gazebo. According to a press release, the $11 million project is designed to restore and enhance habitat for native species that live around South Ferry Slough along the Iowa side of the Mississippi River immediately upstream from Lock and Dam 10 in Guttenberg. The project includes reestablishing eroded islands and reinforcing existing island shorelines with rock. Additional stages of construction will take place in the North Ferry Slough and McMillan Island complexes, pending available funding.
