A Dubuque Thanksgiving tradition spanning more than 60 years is coming to an end. The Ginter family’s annual community Thanksgiving dinner has provided free meals every year since the late Donna Ginter first started serving it in her home in 1961. The tradition quickly grew to serve more than 2,000 meals annually. Now, Donna Ginter’s children say it’s time to close this chapter. The community dinner will not take place this year. Genny Ginter said she and her six siblings spent nearly every Thanksgiving of their lives preparing and serving the annual meal, but they are all getting older now and want flexibility to spend the holiday with their families. The free meal was known to be particularly helpful for older adults, individuals with disabilities, people who couldn’t leave the house and those with nowhere else to go. It offered a sit-down meal for those in need of company and a delivered option for those unable to leave their homes.
