Prosecutors have rested their case in an ongoing murder trial against a Northwest Illinois woman accused of killing her husband’s grandmother. 31 year old Shannon Bussan of Elizabeth, Ill., is charged in Lafayette County Circuit Court with first-degree intentional homicide in relation to the death of 83 year old Lynne Montgomery of Benton. Bussan is accused of killing Montgomery on Feb. 27, 2023 as part of a plot to take money that Montgomery kept in a safe. Authorities began investigating the death after notes were found in Mongtomery’s home stating Bussan had harmed her. Detective Paul Klang, with the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department, testified Thursday to reviewing data collected from Bussan’s cellphone that placed her in the area of Montgomery’s residence as early as 11:14 a.m. Feb. 27, 2023. That runs counter to interviews Bussan completed with law enforcement in which she stated she arrived at Montgomery’s home around 3:30 p.m. that day for a planned visit that was cut short when Bussan discovered Montgomery unresponsive in her bedroom.
