Today the University of Dubuque announced they will be seeking approval and accreditation to open a medical school in Dubuque. Local and state officials, including Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, were in attendance for the announcement. Gov. Reynolds said a new medical school would be a catalyst for Iowa needs right now across the state.
The school will be called the John and Alice Butler College of Osteopathic Medicine in recognition of the Butlers’ $60 million donation to the school. This will be the first new medical school in Iowa in over 125 years. The school will be opened in yet to be determined downtown Dubuque location. University President Travis Frampton said,
The school of medicine is anticipated to open in 2028 with an initial class size of 90 students and by 2030 anticipates a total enrollment of 800 students in the four-year program.
