Officials in Dubuque might move the start of the school year to later this month. Superintendent Stan Rheingans told families and staff of Dubuque Community Schools that heβs recommending classes start on August 24th β which is 10 days later than the district had planned. The additional days will give school leaders more time to work with health officials to sort out details about contact tracing and notifying parents of positive COVID-19 cases. Any changes to the start date would need approval from the school board at its next meeting. Dubuque school officials plan to start the year with students alternating in-person and remote learning days. However, families do have the option to choose an all-virtual education as well.

Governor Kim Reynolds has said all schools in Iowa should open for in-person classes and would be able to move to online teaching if school districts got approval from the state.
