A northeast Iowa teacher was given deferred judgment recently after she pled guilty to a disorderly conduct charge for biting a student. Reports show 49-year-old Anita Smith of Edgewood was sentenced to a year of probation – but, with the deferred judgment, the case is removed from her record if certain obligations are met. An initial charge of assault was filed following the incident in mid-March at Starmont High School. Court documents state the 16-year-old student had bruises and teeth imprints in their arm after she bit them in what she called a demonstration.
